Chief Justice Roberts was the key swing vote which upheld the Government’s ability to force citizens to buy a product or be fined for not doing so.
To say I am disappointed would be a massive understatement.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the individual insurance requirement at the heart of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.
The decision means the historic overhaul will continue to go into effect over the next several years, affecting the way that countless Americans receive and pay for their personal medical care

These SOB’s need to be answerable to the someone.
The only silver lining I can even pretend to see if I turn my head and squint in just the right way is that Roberts essentially defined the funding of Obamacare as a tax, an argument that Obama’s Solicitor General actually DENIED in oral arguments, and yet that is how it is upheld.
It is conceivable that Romney can use this to show that Obama is guilty now of the largest tax increase since WW2, if not in the history of the USA.
There will be those who will argue that this will energize the conservative base, but I’m pretty sure it will do just the opposite. Obama’s re-election chances just went from slim to pretty darn good.
You forget that the religious right is basically socialist. Roberts is following his religious background. It is the only way I can see that he could support this.
The way the commerce clause has been interpreted will destroy this country.
Religious right may be many things… but I can tell you it is not socialist
Trust me, I am much more acquainted with it.
Of course, there are always exceptions, but speaking in general terms.
The more I look at this, the more I find myself wondering if Roberts is an idiot or a genius.
The bottom line as far as I can see it is that Roberts basically threw this back at Obama and Congress. He is basically saying “yes, Congress has the power to institute a massive tax to pay for a social program.”
That’s not necessarily as good for liberals as they think it is. Roberts is sort of saying “yep, Congress and the President have the power to tax the living hell out of the middle class. And that’s what they’ve done.”
Not sure if that’s going to be a winning result for Democrats or not.
Heh, the ruling basically says, “the law is a lie, but it’s a constitutional lie.”
Yeah, I think there could be a way to pull some sort of win out of this for conservatism… except that the “this is a massive tax” idea will be ruthlessly quashed by the mainstream media.
Instead we’ll hear hymns of praise for Obama’s brave and progressive actions to help the common man.
True jsullens, but I’m not sure how much power the media has to define the narrative anymore.
There is, perhaps, one other silver lining in this. Although Obamacare itself was held to be constitutional as a tax the ruling specifically excludes the use of the Commerce Clause for this sort of endeavor.
That means that in the future any attempt to foist a new massive social program on the public cannot be done under the commerce clause. It may have farther reaching consequences even on less sweeping legislation.
Yeah, that’s a bit of “horse already out of the barn” but at least the SCOTUS finally attempted to put some limits on what the Commerce Clause can do.
This ruling will do nothing to dissuade conservatives from voting on election day. I think it will have just the opposite effect.
I was worried a repudiation of Obamacare by the Supremes would really energize Obama’s liberal base and give him an effective campaign meme.
But now the Republicans will be able to more effectively run against an unpopular law. It may just give them a political advantage in November.
Maybe Roberts knew what he was doing.
Maybe you’re right.
I am somewhat pleasantly surprised to see both Mitt Romney and Mitch McConnell jumping on the “largest tax increase in history” bandwagon.
Obama lied. I know that’s redundant.
