Do not underestimate the danger of Egypt descending into full-fledged civil war.
Cairo (CNN) — Egypt’s highest court declared the parliament invalid Thursday, and the country’s interim military rulers promptly declared full legislative authority, triggering a new level of chaos and confusion in the country’s leadership.
The Supreme Constitutional Court found that all articles making up the law that regulated parliamentary elections are invalid, said Showee Elsayed, a constitutional lawyer.
The ruling means that parliament must be dissolved, state TV reported.
Parliament has been in session for just over four months. It is dominated by Islamists, a group long viewed with suspicion by the military.
The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, in control of the country since Mubarak’s ouster, said that it now has full legislative power and will announce a 100-person assembly that will write the country’s new constitution by Friday.
I have not yet seen any substantive US State Dept. response to this “coup” but I can predict that whatever Obillary has to say will be ineffective and anti-democratic.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWell, when “democracy” leads to radical Islamics being in charge, I’m not all that impressed by the process.
So… back in the 80s Henry Kissinger supposedly made the observation that the USA should not sit idly by while a country voted itself into a dictatorship.
I suppose “anti-democratic” wasn’t the right thing to say above.
My suspicion is that things in Egypt are likely worse then they are being reported. Egypt has been getting more and more radical by the day. I have no doubt that Islamist forces are being funded by Saudi Arabia, Iran and other countries that want to see Egypt become an Islamist state.
I don’t think the average American has any idea how close to exploding the entire Middle East is right now. We could see another Middle East war erupt quite literally any day. I would not be surprised to wake up tomorrow and discover that Israel has bombed the crap out of Iran. That entire region is more unsettled than it has been in decades.
Of course that won’t be reported by the press that is trying desperately to hide Obama’s foreign policy incompetence.
Well, it’s only “incompetence” if your goal is a peaceful middle east. If, instead, you desire a growth of Islamic states, Obama seems to be doing quite well.
