So today I took my Steelers football with me when we took the dog for a walk, just to get some upper body exercise as part of the walk. So I paced off each throw. My best throw was 53 paces (which may or may not be 53 yards, but it’s going to be pretty close).
My general throw when I try to air it out is about 45 paces. So that was about a 20% improvement over my “normal” throw.

Really? 53 yards? 159 feet? Really?
Okay, I’m gonna believe you because you are an honest man.
I guess I might be able to do that. Naw…maybe 35 yards…but I’d have to pop Advil for a week or so.
Well, 53 long paces, and. I know when I was a freshman in High School I took a 30 inch stride, and I was a lot smaller then. Let’s say I now have a 33 inch stride… still gotta be over 45 yards… but it was a bit downhill…
Did you use a junior or official sized football? If I’m throwing for distance I prefer the smaller size.
53 yards is impressive. Did you recently have the opportunity to dip your arm in the Fountain of Youth?
Here’s the key bit….”but it was a bit downhill.”
Not a hater, just a stater…
Drax, yeah, but I did throw one 52 paces on a completely level part of the road. 53 was just my farthest throw. The 52 paces was definitely an anomaly though… Other than that my farthest on flat or slightly uphill throws was 49.
Dadman, it is a “junior” football. It’s one of those promotional team footballs which is probably half the size of an official football. I do have an official sized and weighted football I could throw, but I haven’t thrown it in a long time. I suspect I would have difficulty throwing that one over 40 paces. And that is in part because I find it much more difficult to grip a full sized football.
Little known historical fact. Footballs were designed to be difficult to throw. When the game of football began, throwing the ball was not only rare, but what is now the typical downfield pass was actually illegal.
