Wexler falls into a comedic interviewer’s trap — and he’s not laughing

I don’t watch the Colbert Report, but I don’t watch much TV at all. But if I did, I still wouldn’t watch the Colbert Report. I don’t know what it is, but I find almost all current political “humor” to be sophomoric. In this case Colbert gets a big kick out of getting Democrat Congressman Wexler to look at the camera and complete the sentence “I enjoy cocaine because…”

It’s the same level of “comedy” as Mike Martin saying “Ass-sphinctor says ‘what’” rapidly so that someone replies “what?” so that Mike and his prepubescent audience can snicker and point and say “heh, he’s an ass-sphinctor.” It’s Beavis and Butthead style humor. It’s all about making someone else look foolish or stupid so that the perpetrator and his “in group” can feel better about themselves. It’s the kind of humor that gives humor a bad name.

I guess I’d like to convince myself that this sort of humor is more common on the Left than on the Right, but I have no idea since I don’t watch either. What I do know is that humor in this country has fallen on hard times when a “talent” of Steven Colbert’s caliber is considered the “hot, in thing” by people.
