EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Brett Favre is back on the field with the Minnesota Vikings.
The three-time MVP started his second season in Minnesota on Wednesday, wearing a helmet, shoulder pads and a red quarterback’s jersey as he worked out with his teammates on their practice field.

I’ve got no problem with it, if the guy can play, let him play. I do get a little tired of the yearly soap opera though…

Doesn’t Favre have the right to take his time in deciding if his body can stand up to the pounding of yet another season?
Yes, he was back and forth about retirement. That isn’t unlike a lot of people. My dad talked about retiring for over 8 years before he actually did it. When you love what you are doing, and can still do it, it makes the decision harder. Last year was one of Brett’s better years.
Its the media that turned it into far more than it was. As they usually do, because they don’t really report, they preach and pontificate more than report. They value their OWN opinions far more than any facts.
I wasn’t passing judgement on Favre with my “soap opera” comment as much as I was just indicating how tiresome I find the coverage of it. Favre reportedly told a group of his teammates in the off-season that he would play until he’s 50 if his body holds out, and I believe that. I think Favre is highly motivated to pull an Elway and retire after winning a Super Bowl MVP. I think that’s what really drives the guy.
I tire of the pundits who, since, at least, 10 minutes after his last game, began asking “Will he come back?” have built this story up over the months without a single word from Favre.
How can they say he’s seeking the limelight or being a diva when he has done absolutely nothing to warrant that? He called no press conferences prior to his signing. He made almost no statements to the press until the end of the process.
Meh. Fripping “journalists.” Make a story, then slam the subject of that story.
Ask LeBron.
Well, it’s at least a little fair to put some of the blame on his teammates or the front office of the Vikings. I’ve seen a number of “leaks” in the past six months on Favre’s comments, and they are coming from somewhere other than the press.
During the course of the many months since the end of last season, there have been precious little “leaks” from anyone concerning Favre’s return. Frankly, I attribute much of this to his agent who apparently got the contract re-negotiated, adding a potential 4-6 million for the season. Almost everything I’ve heard from the “locker room” (other than the controversial “I’m not coming back” texts which were “sourced” but never attributed to any specific source) have been along the lines of “Love to have him back.” “Wish he’d make up his mind.” “Jackson will be a great QB.” “We’re getting ready to play either way.” Etc.
From my perspective, it’s simply. If he has someone who’s willing to pay him to play and he wants to play, let him play. (Ask Jeff Garcia…) If he wants to maeuver things (or his agent does and he goes along) so that he doesn’t have to do training camp, and can, more power to him. He’s fripping Brett Favre for pete’s sake!
I guarantee that, if he had an 8-8 season with 20/20, then Minnesota wouldn’t be pampering him (likely wouldn’t even ask him back). But, he didn’t.
He’s fripping Brett Favre. All you lesser mortals go through training camp. When you own every single significant QB record in existence, you can set your own terms, eh?
But, you can’t.
Because, he’s Brett friggin’ Favre and you’re not.
Live with it peons.
LOL, I don’t know why you keep thinking I’m arguing with you about Brett or his motivations. I clearly said I’ve got no problem with it. He can play ’til he’s 50 if he wants, and if someone is willing to pay him. More power to him in fact.
I just get tired of the yearly Brettapalooza, much like I was tired of the Cutlerapalooza which seems now to have finally gone away. I haven’t seen a single ESPN story about Cutler being an “elite” QB this year. Quite the contrary, now I am seeing ESPN reporters say things like “Cutler’s decision making has always been questionable.” LOL, not that THEY questioned it until Cutler flopped in a SECOND NFL city, while I’ve been questioning it since Shanahan admitted to tearing his play book in half for his pampered intellectually deficient “mega-star.”
My attitude is “just play the damn game and we’ll see what the results are.”
Oh, and someone in Brett’s “inner circle” did leak the “play til I’m 50″ comment. If he really said that. But that sounds to me like vintage Brett, so I have very little doubt that he did.
