My boss raised again today the potential that I might be asked to move to Atlanta to remain employed, and suggested that a move to Atlanta pre-empting such a request would probably be well received by upper management…
Hmm….. I was just in Atlanta and I sure did not like the traffic, but otherwise I could probably live in the area…
Thinking….

Climb that ladder…you know you want to.
LOL, actually right now where I am in my life, the corporate ladder is the least of my concerns.
Keeping my job though…. that’s pretty high up the list.
Cosmic, this is all anecdotal. I have driven in many large US cities. I can honestly say that the drivers in Denver are the most courteous, alert, and “look out for the other guy” crowd I’ve ever come across in a major metro area.
Atlanta is a mixed bag of courteous, plain old jackass, and WAY TOO MUCH on the road. Given my choice, I’d stay in Denver (and that’s saying something for a guy that hates cold weather). Don’t get me wrong. I like Georgia, and the folks that live there.
But, Colorado is just as hospitable a place…without some of the downside.
The South is my home by choice. But, I don’t think I’d choose to live in a large metro area in the South. SHV/BC is the top of my limit.
I think BC traffic is worse than both Denver and Atlanta…
My preference would be a move to Montana and some of that dental floss agriculture…
Dadman, there are many days here in BC that I think you are spot on! Jeepers! My sleepy little hometown is a traffic nightmare.
I think that, until I go to Baton Rouge…absolutely the most congested place I’ve ever been.
I’m with you on the Montana move. Well, except for the cold weather. Have I ever mentioned that I hate cold weather?
Louisiana traffic suffers because of the shoddy roads. It’s been at least five years since I’ve been in SHV/BC, but the last time I was there, the road system was far undersized to the population growth.
That’s kind of the problem in Atlanta. They have experienced explosive growth in the past 20 years and are playing a lot of catch up.
Would you have to work in Atlanta proper, CC? Most of my family there is in the Sandy Springs area (just north of the 285 loop) and it’s a very nice area.
Our offices are in northeast Atlanta, off of the 400 tollway, just south of 285. So pretty far from Atlanta proper, but the traffic there was unbelievable.
One of the major problems Bossier has is that they still have trains that run through the center of the dang city and have very few flyways over the train tracks, so one train can cause major traffic grief. The main drag through Bossier is flanked by a busy train track for its entire length. I’ve never seen anything like that in any other city that had pretensions of “being something.”
Heh! We built the Benton Road overpass for heaven’s sake! But you and Cullen are both correct.
The growth has far outpaced the expansion of concrete to handle it. And, when you have two East-West rail lines, and another that is North-South/becoming NW criss-crossing…well, it’s a recipe for frustration.
But, even if there were NO trains, it would still be a mess. North Bossier is a zoo…and South is almost as bad…even when the tracks are clear.
From what I can tell Atlanta’s problems are not just the massive growth, but the decision to route two major interstates (75 and 85) into one highway right through the heart of the city. Whoever was responsible for that travesty of traffic engineering should be tried for criminal idiocy.
