Since Dadman has been such a vocal critic of the BCS system, I know he’s going to be thrilled that Obama is going to nationalize the college championship system. That will definitely do away with all those cushy special deals that the bowls and certain colleges have managed to finagle out of the BCS! Miscreants will be shaking in their boots now that Obama’s hobnail boots will be in their faces! Yay!
One day shortly after the Second World War ended, Winston Churchill and Labour Party Prime Minister Clement Attlee encountered one another at the urinal trough in the House of Common’s men’s washroom. Attlee arrived first. When Churchill arrived, he stood as far away from him as possible. Attlee said, "Feeling standoffish today, are we, Winston?" Churchill said: "That’s right. Every time you see something big, you want to nationalize it."
I’m reminded of that story by news that President Obama plans to regulate the college football playoff system. To be sure, I understand that there are political points to be had by doing so, because there are some powerful Senators whose home state football squads think they get screwed by the BCS system (I’m talking about you Orin Hatch, who ought to be a limited government guy).

I can’t wait until Obama announces the national champion as part of his next State of the Union address.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackYep, like millions of other fair-minded people, I am opposed to the BCS. To suggest I’m thrilled with Obama’s intervention is a huge assumption. For the record, I’m not. You might want to consider revising the title of your post…
It was an attempt at humorous irony…
What the heck? He doesn’t have anything more important to do?
I mean, there’s STILL waaaaaaaay too much sugar in my soda….
(How transparent is this attempt to fool the rubes? Enough so enough of the rubes will notice the mirrors? Sigh…)
There are also powerful senators whose home-state teams benefit from the BCS. You know, like Nebraska, Texas, Michigan…
How do you think USC or Ohio State fans are going to take it if their team loses a championship shot to some affirmative-action team?
Whether or not the Obama administration intervenes, the BCS is still a pile of putrid buffalo dung. Why should a school, like Utah, or Boise State, or TCU, or BYU, with phenomenal win-loss records over the past few years be denied a fair shot at a championship?
Ever seen the movies Hoosiers or Miracle? We need the possibility of a similar scenario playing out in formerly-known-as D1 football, otherwise we’ll continue to see the same half dozen teams vying for the ‘BCS National Championship’ year after year…ad infinitum.
It’s as boring as it is unethical…
I can’t stand the BCS system of appointing the National Champion.
That said, I see no reason for our Federal Government to be involved with this, other than to kick out the Senators and Representatives who have arranged for this to happen.
Obama needs to stop the ESPeeN talking points.
I know. The BCS sucks.
It would be much better if there was a playoff system in which the teams chosen for the playoffs were selected by some committee or something. That would be way better than the current system of choosing which teams play for the championship by some committee or something.
You clever, Drax. I suggest from now on all schools not affiliated with BCS conferences be banned from March Madness – it would save the selection committee the additional hassle of considering all those lowly ‘affirmative action’ schools. Better yet, the March Madness tournament selection committee could utilize a series of polls and computer algorithms to select the two best teams in the country and just go directly to the ‘March Madness National Championship’ game and save 62 teams the expense and trouble of competing to be champions. Yeah, that would be fun…
