Ug, I think I no longer have the proper temperament for working on computers. I gave up on cars a long time ago, maybe it’s time to give up on computers.
I am trying to get my newly rebuilt desktop online. I had to call Microsoft to re-certify my copy of Windows before I could even get it to boot up. Now I’m trying to figure out why it’s not connecting to the internet. For a while at first it wouldn’t even recognize my keyboard or mouse. It’s working now, I dunno why.

Still, the new computer is randomly shutting down. I don’t know why. I suspect the CPU may be overheating, although I thought I did a good job of installing it and the heat sink…. Sigh…
I’ve decided to let Dell or Sony rebuild my computer if you know what I mean…
This is such an instructive example of why I can’t manage money. The whole point here is that I didn’t want to spend $700 – $1,000 to buy a NEW computer and the $459 + tax and shipping for a new Dell motherboard was just insane, so I decided to be “wise” and buy a new motherboard. Of course the new motherboard won’t fit in the Dell case, so I needed a new case. Of course the new case won’t hold the Dell power supply so I needed a new power supply. So $179 + tax (free shipping) later, I’ve spent most of a day (until about 2:30 am) getting the components moved from my Dell to the new box and actually up and working.
And of course, I’m already seeing two problems…. The CPU is running hot (it’s gotten up to 90C a couple of occasions. I had to redo and reset the heat exchanger to cool the CPU and it seems to be staying in the 70 degree range now, but if I do something really CPU intensive (like playing WoW, for example) it really pushes the CPU. So I did a Google search and discovered the heat exchanger the “helpful” tech guy at Action Computers sold me, isn’t the best cooling device for these hot Intel chips. (Just FYI, the scuttlebutt is that Intel chips run too hot for the performance they provide. Words to the wise…)
Anyway, It’s working now. It doesn’t crash randomly when I surf the net, and it will again play my iTunes songs without crashing. So that’s progress. But it’s not as fast, I think the old motherboard must have had better bus speed or something. But it’s fine. Just takes a bit to launch a program is all.
I used to love to take computers apart and work on them. But that was before you had to put goop all over the CPU and install a cooling system PERFECTLY or cook your mother board…
Oh, it appears that the slowness was due to a virus scan. It’s fast again with the scan off.
