Breaking News Story: CRU has apparently been hacked – hundreds of files released

The details on this are still sketchy, we’ll probably never know what went on. But it appears that University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit has been hacked and many many files have been released by the hacker or person unknown.

The file was large, about 61 megabytes, containing hundreds of files.

It contained data, code, and emails from Phil Jones at CRU to and from many people.

I’ve seen the file, it appears to be genuine and from CRU. Others who have seen it concur- it appears genuine. There are so many files it appears unlikely that it is a hoax. The effort would be too great.

The emails that have been released describe deliberate efforts to modify temperature data in order to “hide” cooling and to exaggerate heating. The email addresses involved include University professors, administrators and research scientists from pretty much all over the world. And this is just the “first” release of “random” data according to the hacker who released it.

I’ve never seen anything like this. If this is true, it appears that those who have been suggesting a worldwide climate hoax conspiracy are not insane at all. However, I’m not yet convinced this is real. It’s going to be interesting to watch the fallout from this. Some of this material, being emails to public universities, could be subject to Freedom of Information Act requests. So if they are real, we should actually be able to find out.

Update: On the National Review Online “Planet Gore” Blog, they have had time to dig more into these emails. If these are real, the implications are somewhat staggering. Besides fudging data (something the CRU was already suspected of doing) these emails describe efforts to discredit scientists who don’t toe the AGW line, efforts to delete emails that have damning information in them, and an effort to essentially blacklist a peer-reviewed scientific publication that dared to publish papers skeptical of AGW.

Wow.
