So, today we dropped the Cosmic Daughter off at college, a 100 mile drive from our home in the mountains. Friday we took all her stuff and got her room set up, but she came back for the weekend. Today was the official “you’re on your own!” dropoff.
Driving back I found myself contemplating lots of things as I drove along with the beautiful Rocky Mountains to the west, scattered storm clouds dotting the plains to the east and listening to my iPod as I tooled along the interstate.
It was fun to be back on a college campus again. There’s something about college campuses that just makes me feel good (and no, it’s not [just] all the hot young chicks in shorts and tank tops) and today was no exception. I love the whole college scene, the guys throwing frisbees on the lawn between the dorms, the girls roaming around in girl-flocks, the sense of growth and freedom that suffuses the place with the general overall feeling of life just beginnning… I should probably have been a college professor since I like the college environment so much.
Oh well, that officially makes today the start of a new chapter in our lives. This is the fourth time we’ve sent the Cosmic Daughter off on her own, and it does get easier each time, but it’s still odd to walk outside and see the empty spot on the driveway where her car used to sit.
Another year, another college loan, and another chapter…. not bad for a weekend I guess.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWe live close to Stanford, and often go there to wander about and take in the college atmosphere, and to get in our 14,000 steps to stay in shape
Stanford is huge so it’s easy to walk several miles there.
My wife grew up in a college campus in China, and she loves to go to different campuses and wander around, and see how different – and similar – they are. During the 4th of July, we went to Boston and wandered around Harvard and MIT as part of “taking in the sights” – and to do the Chinese thing of impressing my Shanghainese nephew, “if you do well in high school, you could go here”…
Aww thanks Dad! (College girls? :/)
You’re right about the college atmosphere; laid back but serious, fun but mature. I enjoy it too. And just for the record, I believe you’d be an awesome college professor. In fact one of my English professors reminds me of you. He gave us his list of books you should read in a lifetime. I think I’ll start making a list of my own as well.
