More and more impeachment is becoming one of the main election year memes of the Democratic Party. Last night on CNN Harry Reid refused to rule out impeachment of George W. Bush over the NSA terrorist surveillance program. Reid called it “illegal.”
I think Republicans should encourage this sort of behavior. Let Bush imply that he is “above the law” a few times in carefully worded speeches that will inflame the MoveOn.org mentality that is taking over the Democratic party, but that seem completely reasonable and proper to reasonable people. Something like this:
“Today, as we do every 45 days, we met with Congress to brief them on the status of the Terrorist surveillance program I initiated and continue to support under the authority given to all Presidents by Article II of the Constitution. We will continue to provide these briefings in the future. In this briefing we identfied additional successful anti-terrorist activities that were made possible through use of this critical intelligence.”
That is guaranteed to send the Michael Moore’s and Barbara Boxers (not to mention Barbra Streisands) of the world into violent fits of Bush Derangement Syndrome, while giving most Americans the impression that GW Bush is doing his duty as President under a time of war to protect the American people.
The more the left tries to turn anti-terrorist phone tapping into Watergate, the better it is for Republican chances in November.
Let’s give them all the rope they need to hang themselves.
