– Scientists dig deep to uncover global mysteries – Jan 30, 2006

It is hard to believe that we have yet to drill a hole two miles deep in the ocean floor. The desire to drill into the earth’s mantle has been a sort of holy grail of geologists for years, I remember talk of drilling for core samples from the mantle back in the 70s. The technical challenges in drilling that deep are immense, but perhaps this ship will be the first to overcome them. It’s an interesting story. Back in the 70s it wasn’t “extreme micro-organisms” that they wanted to drill for, they were, among other things, hoping to find vast mineral reserves in the mantle. I don’t hear so much about the mantle being an exploitable resource anymore, but once the bring up cores samples, who knows what they’ll find?
