Perhaps it is because we are still in the primaries and the battle is between generally aligned party members, but I have been surprised so far by how few “issues” are actually part of the process. My memory tells me that at this time in 1980, 84, 88, 92, 96 and 2000, the political process was all about issues. Stem cell research, abortion, gay marriage, gun control…. It was front and center 24×7. But this year it seems to be all about personalities. The closest thing to debating the issues is the uproar over Romney’s Mormonism vs. Huckabee’s evangelism.
Which brings me to gun control. Four years ago gun control was an important enough issue that we were presented with the totally incongruous picture of John Kerry posing with a shotgun during the primaries, presumably to convince midwestern voters that he wasn’t going to come and pry their precious firearms away. In fact, as if the image of John Kerry with a bunch of good old boys wasn’t comical enough, we got to see Dick Gephardt in camouflage hunting garb, apparently unaware of which end of the gun the shells were ejected from. Such things always give me a huge lift from the pure comic appeal of them, but that has been strangely absent from this campaign so far.
I’ve also seen virtually no attempt to cozy up to the gay and lesbian lobby, a general lack of solidarity with the feminist movement and have not yet seen one Democrat publicly parade into “their” church so the average person can say “see, that Obama is a god-fearin’ man”.
Have I just been missing it, or has this race been almost entirely about personality and image so far?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackOn the Democratic side, and in the absence of John Edwards, it’s a two issue race: Healthcare, and Iraq. Since there’s only a papers width between them on those two issues, it ostensibly comes down to personality as you say.
That seems to be one more issue than the Republicans are stumping, however. I’ve heard Iraq mentioned, in the context of troop withdrawal vs. long-term occupation, but aside from that the Republican debates seemed to have devolved into a ‘find the hidden liberal’ contest. “You voted against tax cuts and voted against ANWR drilling!” “But you supported a withdrawal timetable!”
I really haven’t heard much substantive about what any of these people are going to do to solve the major issues that we face. Sure, we can go read about some of it on their websites but it would be nice to hear them actually debate the issues.
OK, I will admit that John Edwards TRIED to make some hay with issues, but listening to that privileged and pampered, primped-up pretty boy talking about Two Americas was too surreal even for Democrats, so nobody paid attention to him.
On the Republican side I think there are substantive differences, but they don’t really discuss them, they stick with these generic accusations back and forth.
Hopefully we’ll get some meat before we choose the next leader of the free world…
Mmmmmm….meat.
Heh.. I just surfed to foxnews.com and they have a big image showing which ‘celebs’ support Obama and Hillary. Hillary’s come across as a little less flattering I think:
Obama:
Oprah
Matt Damon
DeNiro
Clooney
Hillary:
Madonna
Streisand
Jerry Springer
‘50 Cent’
Hehe.
I saw that too. The caption said “Matt Damon” but the picture sure looked like Leonardo DiCaprio to me. But I could be wrong..
I thought it was Damon. shrug
It’s good to see Obama running Hillary close. A strong showing by Huckabee this evening, too.
It probably was, I don’t really know what Matt Damon looks like…. heh. But when I saw the photo I thought it was Dicaprio but the tag said Matt Damon…
Fox News has gone the way of Entertainment Tonight. I am sick of it.
