In an intriguing move, Bob Melvin chose not to start ace Brandon Webb today fearing his last chance to start in the regular season would be lost to a rain delay. As it turned out, the game was rain-delayed in the 7th. Arizona went on to win the game 8-0.

AZCENTRAL.COM – Webb scratched due to weather
Right-hander Brandon Webb has been scratched from his scheduled start today against the Pirates as the Diamondbacks are concerned that rain might wash away their ace’s last start of the season.

Right-hander Micah Owings will start in Webb’s place. The game is still scheduled to begin at 9:35 a.m. Arizona time.

“We can’t lose this guy,” Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said of Webb. “We can’t get into a situation where he’s out there for an inning or two and we stop (because of a rain delay) and have to try to bring him back.”

Webb will likely start on Friday night in Colorado against the Rockies.

I really like this move. Now, Colorado will have to beat our best pitcher in the first game of the series. Hopefully, the baseball gods will now hand Colorado a loss today against the Dodgers and take a little more pressure off the Snakes going into Denver.

Ain’t baseball great?

P.S. I actually met Brandon Webb in a shoe store in the mall a couple years ago. It was before he won the Cy Young…
