OK, so we went to go see this movie about a rat who wants to be a cook… Let’s just say it didn’t do much for our appetite…
It was a fun movie. I’d say about 3/4 of it was pretty good. The other 1/4 of the movie was reminiscent of some of those old 1960s cartoon shorts with the psychedelic overtones. For some reason the movie put the viewers through two sequences of “food is like music” routines to show how cheese and mushroom combined is like a symphony in your mouth… Sheesh, once was more than enough. Then there was also the dance number sequences with the rats, again reminding me of some of those old Merry Melodies cartoons trying to duplicate the old Hollywood Musical.
But other than that it was a fun movie. The animation, of course, was near-perfect. The story was a good solid old-fashioned rags to riches story. Add to that a dash of family comes first and friends are always there for you, and you pretty much have the story.
But I have to say that no matter how cute you try to make rats, I simply don’t like seeing them swarming over restaurant kitchens. I don’t care if you did put them through the dishwasher first. Yuck.
Still, I give the movie 3.5 frozen food dishes out of four. It’s definitely worth watching if you have young kids.

I thought the movie was wonderful from beginning to end. The people at Pixar are geniuses…Brad Bird the director is an artistic genius…and Disney was lucky to acquire Pixar rather than face a dim future of competing with them in the area they once dominated. There has not been one Pixar production that has disappointed me. The animated short, ‘Lifted’, prior to the Ratatouille feature was also a gem. It was hysterical.
I will say that I liked ‘The Incredibles’ a tad more than Ratatouille, but the difference is negligible.
I had intended to mention the short, but forgot to. My wife was laughing hysterically when the alien was trying to pull the poor guy out of his bedroom.
I’m glad you liked it. I also think Disney was smart to hang onto Pixar. I still find it hard to believe that Steve Jobs is a major player in animated movies…
As I understand it, Pixar was merely a contractual partner with Disney until a couple of years ago when Disney paid something like 7 billion to acquire Pixar. At the time, as I remember it, Pixar was making some noise they didn’t want to work with Disney anymore and was content to compete with Disney going forward. Disney, of course, would have lost that competition…
Hmmm interesting review. I was thinking mom would like that short! lol
I enjoyed the movie, but I had no idea why they put a crazy old lady with a shot gun scene! That was a tad weird. I really loved the animation. The Paris view was amazing, and Remy was a neat character. Although the Grim Eater looked like a character from Corpse Bride!
dreadful graphic design work
