Virginia Tech Shooting Leaves 33 Dead – New York Times
Thirty-three people were killed today on the campus of Virginia Tech in what appears to be the deadliest shooting rampage in American history, according to federal law-enforcement officials. Many of the victims were students shot in a dorm and a classroom building.“Today, the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,†said the university’s president, Charles Steger. The campus police chief said this evening that 15 people were wounded by the gunman, although there were other reports of higher numbers of injuries.
Witnesses described scenes of mass chaos and unimaginable horror as some students were lined up against a wall and shot. Others jumped out of windows to escape, or crouched on floors to take cover.
What is there that you can possibly say about something like this?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThe worst thing, other than the incident happening in the first place, is the rabid dog mentality of the press. The 4 major networks should be ashamed of themselves for piggy backing this senseless tragedy. I don’t know how the talking heads and the company presidents can sleep at night.
That first afternoon, during the press conference where these shameless bastards, were second guess the campus police chief and the University president, it was just disgusting.
Was this all done for ratings? Is this the American Way?
Correction above “second guessing”
Just one more reason I hate the press. When the Platte Canyon shooting happened (in my son’s school, just above his own classroom) the press descended on our little mountain town like a pack of vultures. They peppered distraught parents (mostly mothers) with questions like “do you know where your daughter is right now?” until they got the “money shot” they were looking for as a mother broke down on camera into heart-rending sobs. Gotta have that critical “money shot” you know, and nothing grabs attention from the general public like a mother falling apart on camera.
I hate the press. And I don’t use the word “hate” frequently or lightly. My personal opinion is that a great deal of the problems in this country are directly the result of the press, what they decide to cover, how they decide to slant it, and how much they saturate the culture with it.
I agree that at the very least a great deal of the cynicism and pessimism that so many Americans seem to feel is directly attributable to the incessant stream of negative bile the media brings into our lives each and every day. At worst, I would argue the media is complicit in horrific events like what happened at VT this week. This psycho who just killed 32 innocent people knew the press would eat it up and sent a video to NBC prior to his rampage…
I would have to say I hate the press too…
It is all big business. MSNBC fires Imus because sponsors pulled their ads. They justified the firing as a business decision. Personally I found Inus not to be funny or cutting edge or a shock jock. I found him to be a mean spirited old man the same way I find Rush.
What decisions were made in light of the new found video? Was it big business that drove that decision on the backs of 32 corpses? It certainly wasn’t good taste, as in the case of Imus, or so they say.
To put things in perspective the people of southeastern Michigan have been beaten over the head with case of the woman who disappeared, husband was supect. She was found cut up in pieces by husband. Husband caught after chase, confesses, admits to having sex with 19 years old nanny from Germany, Detroit news crews fly to Germany to harrass family, etc but the local news warns us that “What you may see or hear may be disturbing”
Every day for 3 weeks we have been clubbed with “Breaking News”. Where is the good taste? I find the coverage of this and the VT disaster much more offensive than the ramblings of a 67 year old past his prime DJ.
Where is the outrage to this BS?
” This may be offensive to some of our viewers” The real diclaimer should be “If you are a decent human being turn off your TV now, but I you like to scratch your crotch to sight of blood and dead people, you are the audience we want to watch this clip”
This has nothing to do with public right to know. Other outlets are availiable for information gathering, so let the families have some peace. Keep the politicians and professional mourners in Washington or the state capital.
The Janet Jackson boob story changed the way TV and radio have been censored. This coverage should do the same thing for Breaking News.
The funny thing about the Jackson fiasco was it was orchestrated by one guy with a computer email program that was on a mission. No one in the MSM ever addressed that. I hope that same guy gets off his ass and addresses a real problem.
Wow…to my amazement I find myself almost completely in agreement with gjh on this issue. The planets must be aligned is some odd configuration…
Deep down inside we are all the same.
gjh:
If you see and hear Rush as a “mean spirited old man” that says a lot more about you than about Rush. Rush is a lot of things, and I am no fan of Rush Limbaugh, but he delivers a positive, amusing and topically relevent show to his listeners. He lampoons the left, but that’s his schtick.
Ann Coulter more fits the bill you have applied to Rush.
Otherwise I agree with Dadman about your post.
If you listen to Rush, how many times during a week does he race bait? In his own words he is “tired of carrying the water for this administration” He admits he is a shill but I don’t think this is the post to debate this item.
I watched and listened last night to Scarborough and Co. try to defend NBC for releasing the tapes. What public “right to know” did these tapes reveal. I can’t see anything that makes my, yours or anybody else’s life more complete by watching this crap. I have not watched anything beyond the first glimpses of these tapes before turning the channel.
I’d rather watch Comedy Central.
gjh:
You are now making a completely different accusation against Rush Limbaugh than that he is a “mean spirited old man.” Your new accusation is that Rush is, or up until recently, has been, an “admitted shill.” I would say that this is closer to the truth.
I’m sorry. But I only partially agree with gjh. Big business is what has made this country great. I agree that the media is actively hurting this country. But I am coming to the conclusion that people are getting what they deserve. If enough people stopped watching this crap then they would change. But I don’t see it. They continue to watch in droves. I refuse to cater to this drivel but I have to say my wife eats it up. I don’t understand why people can’t see what is happening.
MtnLurker:
Good thing your wife doesn’t read this blog, eh?
I think I’ve said before. I don’t watch TV. I listen to some talk radio shows on the radio, mostly Hugh Hewitt on the drive home and Bill Bennett on the drive to work. If I’m not listening to “Breakfast with the Beatles” instead. Or, as today, Louis Armstrong and John Denver on my iPod.
But TV? I can’t watch it for more than a few minutes before I start getting a powerful desire to get up and do something remotely productive with my life. The big names in news pretty much just irritate the heck out of me so I can’t watch them without my blood pressure rising, and I’ve got better things to do with my time than get my blood pressure up.
