Pelosi ready to make history as new speaker – Nation/Politics – The Washington Times, America’s Newspaper A new Congress convenes today with a narrow Democratic majority lording over a despondent Republican minority. While the full weight of Republicans’ powerlessness sinks in after 12 years of control, Democrats are celebrating the historic election today of the first female speaker of the House. “We have waited over 200 years for this time to come,” Mrs. Pelosi said on the eve of her selection as speaker, a position that makes her second in line to the presidency after Vice President Dick Cheney. “We will not just break through a glass ceiling, we will break through a marble ceiling,” she said. “In more than 200 years of history, there was an established pecking order — and I cut in line.” After calling herself “the most powerful woman in America,” Mrs. Pelosi flexed her right muscle like a weight lifter to much applause at an event yesterday titled a “women’s tea.” “All right, let’s hear it for the power,” she screamed as the jubilant applause continued.
I wonder how long this “look at me!” schtick will play well with America? I’m sure it will be praised on the View, but will it play on main street? I know I find it to be a pretty disgusting spectacle of self-promotion and gloating. But then, hey, I voted Republican…
See, the problem with “power” is that you have to use it. And it is when you use power that people start asking “what the heck is she doing?” I personally think her initial record as a “leader” has been abysmal. I hope she learns on the job.
Update: – Shouldn’t she have flexed her “left muscle?” And what brilliant writing, eh? Which muscle is your “right muscle” anyway? And how do you “flex it like a weight lifter?” Does it form the shape of Arnold Schwarzanegger? And even if it does, how can you tell? Did she strip down and oil up like weight lifters do? Ug.. I’m starting to ge a little bothered by the visual image…

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackOne has to come to grips with the realization the Republicans no longer follows a fiscally-conservative agenda leaving those supporters devoid of any enthusiasm and placing voting day on the bottom of the list of things to do – hence we have Pelosi.
Do think she will be a pathetic leader and will embarrass even the most liberal of Dems.
And really, none of this should come as a suprise as it is a normal process for a great country to be infected with Victory Disease and flip on it’s head.
My initial reading of Nancy Pelosi is that she is a political opportunist of the first order, meaning she’ll say or do pretty much whatever it takes to remain in power. Check out her recent attempts to paint herself as a traditional Irish Catholic, for example.
Whether she succeeds or not depends a great deal on the Republicans I think. If the Republicans play the same vicious brand of partisan, obstructionist politics for the next two years that the Democrats have played for the past six years, then I think her tenure will be short and we’ll see Congress flip again in ‘08.
Now, that’s not to say that’s what I want to happen. What I want is responsible, mature leadership that takes this country in a direction where we can avoid more 9/11 attacks, we can sleep nights not fearing Iranian missiles dropping on our heads, and we can keep our taxes at a level that I can at least keep my head above water.
But I don’t think I’m going to get many of those wishes.
Funny to think there can be anything close to responsible in this political environment.
In a for-real sense it is only natural for those without – to envy, however, Iranian missles are the least of this country’s worries. It is a decline, or diversion, of what’s under Iran’s soil that will ultimately lead to far more than just fear.
And as far as taxes, did have the chance to visit with my Congressman today (Tom Petri), and he put taxes into perspective by saying it doesn’t matter how much the tax is if there are no profits.
