Seriously, I really did. After the Chernobyl accident, when the world’s supposed environmental experts were predicting genetic armageddon, I predicted that if they sealed off the area around Chernobyl, within a couple decades it would become a wildlife sanctuary with vibrant, healthy plants and animals.
But the beasts that roam the deserted zone are normal, save the radiation levels. Indeed, the book suggests that, paradoxically, the dirtiest radioactive site in Europe has become the continent’s biggest animal sanctuary.

A related development is the biggest animal sanctuary in Northeast Asia is in the Korean DMZ. Many South Koreans hope that war can be avoided and unification done in such a way that it can be turned into a giant national park.
