These photos were done as a test of the system to ensure that the landing was fully successful. The rover had not yet retracted it’s shroud, so it could only shoot downward. Also it was deliberately a small resolution photo because they had only a short window to relay the signal to earth before the Odyssey was out of range of Curiosity.
One photo is of the wheel of the rover. The other photo is a very wide angle fisheye that just barely captures the plains where the rover landed.
Hopefully today we’ll start seeing higher resolution and color photos.
Color is coming. It may be a week before they finish all the shakedown stuff and start actually taking photos. I’m not sure when they currently plain to raise the “periscope” which contains the hi-res cameras. Hopefully that will go well.
