So far I haven’t commented much about the whole “Path to 9/11″ dustup. It’s not that I don’t care or don’t have an opinion, it’s more that there are plenty of much more talented bloggers tackling the issue already.
What I haven’t seen much commentary on though, is what the Republicans can do to take advantage of this situation.
I think they should run an ad. The ad should start with video of the Two Towers burning and collapsing. Then they should show a quotation from the head of the 9/11 commission saying that the docu-drama may contain fictionalized dialogue, but that it sticks pretty close to the 9/11 commission’s findings.
Then Ken Mehlman or John McCain or Mit Romney should come on and tell the American people the following:
“This movie is about why the attacks of 9/11 occurred. It contains scenes and dialogue that are less than complimentary to both the Clinton and the Bush administrations. We Republicans are embarrassed by the public display of our errors and misjudgements, but we believe strongly in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and have raised no objection to this movie airing. Democrat Senators, however, have used their full power and authority as the nation’s highest legislative authority to attempt to intimidate ABC into not showing this movie because they understand that it will embarrass the Clinton administration.
This is not a debate about truth, justice or the American way. This is about Free Speech, Government intimidation and public service. We ask that you remember this when you go to the polls in November to vote.”
