For the third time since I moved to Colorado our state is in the national news due to a lunatic (or lunatics) with guns and captive targets. First was the Columbine shooting, then the Platte Canyon shooting (which my son was in school just a short distance from the shooting) and now this.
There will be political grandstanding, exploitation of the event for campaign purposes and renewed screeching for gun control.
I don’t remember if I’ve ever been in that theater, but since we used to live in Aurora and it’s just right next to the Aurora Mall where we shopped regularly, I would bet I have been in that theater before, unless it was built after we moved. Anyway I’ve spent a good bit of time in that area and lived just a few miles south of the mall and theater for about five years before moving into the mountains.
In this case the shooter surrendered and is in custody. Maybe that will allow us to shed some light on what was going on in his twisted mind.
But I doubt it. In the end I can’t help but think that crazy is just crazy.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackYou may recall we lived in Aurora too in the late 80s. Our second daughter was born at Fitzsimons and we lived just down the road from the mall and theater where this insanity occurred. I wish there was a way to stop it but crazy is just crazy as you say…
One other thing: crazy doesn’t need a gun, particularly if you add a bit of evil cleverness and planning to the mix (which this guy had – a failed PhD student in neurosurgery wouldn’t be dumb). One of the deadliest single-person mass killings happened in China a few years ago, where someone put rat poison in the kitchen soup tub at a popular restaurant. The poison had no taste and killed in very small quantities, so over 100 people ended up dying.
It turned out the killer had a generic grudge against the world and wanted to randomly kill lots of people.
It’s a crazy small world. One of the victims, Alex Teves, attended high school with my kids here in Phoenix.
