LF Special Report: Singularities and Nightmares In order to give you pleasant dreams tonight, let me offer a few possibilities about the days that lie ahead — changes that may occur within the next twenty or so years, roughly a single human generation. Possibilities that are taken seriously by some of today’s best minds. Potential transformations [...]
Well, the New York Giants just ruined about half of the nation’s football hopes for the weekend, particularly the hopes of network executives who had hoped for several NFC playoff contending games tomorrow, had the Giants lost. Now most of those games become pointless exercises as far as the postseason is concerned. Including, perhaps, the [...]
We watched the DVD of this movie at a relative’s house.
I can’t imagine what led M. Knight Shyamalan to make this movie. He certainly should never have allowed it to see the light of day once it had been edited and screened. Surely someone was telling him “Bury this thing!”
I’ve rarely watched a movie where [...]
So, while we were wandering around the country on our vacation travels, we managed to work in one movie, the Ben Stiller special effects comedy “Night At the Museum.”
I could play the sophisticate here and trash this movie in a variety of legitimate and accurate ways. There is certainly plenty to find fault with.
But what [...]
2006 is coming to a close. 2007 is rapidly approaching.
Usually at this time of year people look back, and look forward, trying to make sense of what happened in the year ending, and what they can do differently in the year ahead.
I’m not much for new year’s resolutions. I learned a long time ago that [...]
Sheehan, 4 others arrested near Bush’s ranch | Chron.com – Houston Chronicle CRAWFORD — Peace activist Cindy Sheehan and four other protesters were arrested today for blocking a road near President Bush’s ranch, authorities said, snagging Vice President Dick Cheney’s motorcade in the backup.
Sheehan and the others lay or sat in the road about 20 minutes [...]
And it’s packed snow. It’s going to take a major effort just to dig out enough wood to get the house warm tomorrow….
I can’t complain about snow. It’s what keeps the mountains from burning to the ground in the summer. Good snow. Love snow. Love it.
Flying like a bird at 5,000ft, the winged wonder | the Daily Mail
This guy straps carbon-fiber wings to his back with some model rocket engines on them and flies by “intuition” until his fuel runs out and his glide path is too low, when he then opens a parachute to land.
Pretty cool. I expect to [...]
My Way News – Saddam Hussein Executed for War Crimes BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) – Saddam Hussein, the shotgun-waving dictator who ruled Iraq with a remorseless brutality for a quarter-century and was driven from power by a U.S.-led war that left his country in shambles, was taken to the gallows clutching a Quran and hanged Saturday.
I never [...]
So, I got some music for Christmas… And some of them were compilations of several artists, so now I have some duplicate songs, from the original album and then from the compilation. I assume this is not unique and others have encountered the same issue. Do you put them on your iPod more than once, [...]
OK, a week in Louisiana and Nebraska, and now back to Colorado to find two feet of snow in my driveway. Well, maybe it was 18 inches, it was dark. We had to shovel it out just to get the car into the garage so we could unpack it. But we’re back.
So while I was out shopping the other day, I stumbled across a set of books in the Borders bookstore at the mall that were obviously intended to cash in on the Harry Potter craze. One of them was a supposed “scientific” study of dragons. Another was a “How to make wands” book. Both were [...]
I am probably going to be blogging very lightly for the next week or so. I hope that doesn’t get me off of anyone’s blog roll or out of their favorites list!
It’s time to pack and get ready for long drives on snowy highways.
I will try to check in from time to time. And I’ll [...]
From the snowstorm of 12/21 – 12/22/06.
My deck. This was taken through our screen door since I can’t get it open. You can tell it messes up the color and has some reflections on it.
My dog in the driveway, she’s a full-grown black lab, so you can get some idea of the height of the [...]
Here is the “official” report on snowfall in Bailey:
“Mount Bailey (above the town of Bailey) — 55 inches”
I can’t say we have that much in our yard, but I can’t argue with the weather service.
That’s a record for us since we moved here. Usually I over-estimate snowfall, but this is pretty amazing. 55 inches!
Yay! Blue skies and sunshine! My driveway is shoveled, swept and cleared to the recently plowed street! Now I can put up the shovels for a while. Woohoo!
That’s today, the winter solstice.
“Solstice” in latin, essentially means “sun stands still.” It’s significance is that today, if you plot the apparent motion of the sun’s declination (declination is basically the sun’s apparent latitude location) today, it seems to stand still. This is very important because up until today, since the Summer solstice, the sun [...]
Well over two feet of snow now, and it’s still coming down. We’ve shoveled three times already, my son shoveled a bit too. We can’t open our kitchen screen door, it’s got too much snow piled up against it.
My shoulders, back and arms are sore from shoveling. Luckily no blisters yet though.
I don’t know if [...]
Two inches or so, with more between me and town. Working from home today. Some forcasts are saying as much as 18 inches here. Gonna be shoveling today…
Update: 11:00 – 7.5 inches and still falling hard. Shoveled once, the driveway is covered again.
Update: 11:33 oops, meant 12:30 – 12 inches but not falling so [...]
