What's funny is that I feel like I was pretty brutal, but I still have three huge and one medium sized box full of stuff that I'm going to hang onto until we move, and then decide what to do.

Why do I keep an ancient original Macintosh computer? Because I'm sentimental I suppose. Sentimental about electronic junk? I can't deny it.

Sounds like a great tax donation for what you can't sell.

well except for the letters.

I used to be like this, until I went overseas and learned to live out of whatever I could (relatively) easily lug around on a crowded train and through a train station in China. This taught me to be absolutely brutal in getting rid of stuff.

However, old computer crap (and obsolete tech books, which is sort of the same thing) is the hardest to get rid of, particularly since it was so darn expensive when I bought it. I still have a couple of old 56K modems around, which have been used once or twice in the past ten years.

One thing I refuse to get rid of is my old bootable CD-ROM with DOS 4.22 on it. This has saved my butt several times when I had to rebuild notebooks and PCs after one mishap or another. I can then at least get enough of a FS installed that I can reboot and load the OS installer...

On the bright side, I have turned the final corner and am in the home stretch. I've re-organized and re-located all my current interest stuff, boxed up the stuff I don't use anymore and can actually see the carpet now. I've got some empty boxes and some ancient useless books to get rid of and some random junk to put away, but it looks like I'll be able to walk from the door to the window now without doing St. Vitas dance. No more stubbing toes on boxes full of rubber mold making material or leaping up in pain when I discover that stegosaurus mini I lost...

Cosmic,
Don't put it in a storage unit. Determine now what you want to keep, and sell or give away the rest. You'll b able to use the cash when you move, and you'll avoid this same post about cleaning out the storage unit 5-10 years from now.
